[spielfrieks] Meeples Choice Retrospectives: 2012

So let's see if we can do this thing! The first retrospective vote will be for five years ago: 2012.

Here are the 24 games that got nominations that year:

1812: The Invasion of Canada
Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small
Andean Abyss
Android: Netrunner
Clash of Cultures
CO2
Copycat
Edo
Escape: Curse of the Temple
Ginkgopolis
Keyflower
Lords of Waterdeep
Love Letter
Myrmes
Nieuw Amsterdam
Pax Porfiriana
Seasons
Snowdonia
Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures
Suburbia
Terra Mystica
The Manhattan Project
Trains
Tzolk'in

In addition, there were six games that tied for 25th place in the preliminary round. I didn't include them in the final voting because of issues with Yahoo Group's polling feature, but they'd be included if we did this today. So let's include them in our retrospective vote. They are:

1989: Dawn of Freedom
Las Vegas
Mice and Mystics
Rolling Freight
The Great Zimbabwe
The Palaces of Carrara

I went to the Geek to find out what the top-rated games from 2012 are. There are five in the top 100 that aren't in our list. There are three others in the top 250 from 2012. So let me list them here and if we can get a second for any of them, I'll include them in the new election. First, the top 100 games:

Descent (2nd edition)
Kemet
Robinson Crusoe
The Resistance: Avalon
War of the Ring (2nd edition)

And here are the other three, less highly rated games:

Legendary
Mage War Arena
Targi

Finally, if there are any 2012 games that aren't mentioned in any of these lists that you'd strongly consider as one of your top 3 games of the year, please post it. If we can get a second for any of them, we'll include it in the poll.

Just to summarize, the first 30 games (from the first two lists) will be included. I'll include any of the next 8 games (from the last two lists) if someone seconds them. I'll also include any other games that get nominated and seconded. Games should only be nominated or seconded if they have a good chance of being one of you 3 favorite games of 2012.

Let's see what kind of response we get. I should be able to set up a new poll in the app by Monday or so and we can see what we all think about these games five years later!

Larry really enjoyed reading through the 2012 games, in particular
expanding on the original list. The list alone makes for interesting
reading to me, especially how it compares to the picks of the year: Terra
Mystica, Tzolk'in and Keyflower. The original awards geeklist is here
(don't visit if you're easily swayed by the original votes :-) ):
https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/158736/winners-2012-meeples-choice-awards

I find it interesting that Coup never made the list, so I will nominate to
see what others think. My reasoning is that it is the 4th highest game from
2012 by Number of Voters on BGG, and I still see it played a lot. With Love
Letter and Resistance: Avalon already on the list, I feel it is worth a
play-off between them.

With the look back on the games, are there criteria we should be using for
our voting? Looking back over the last 10 years winners there seems to be a
distinct preference for mid-heavy Euro's with occasional exceptions given
to breakthrough lighter-weight/gateway games: Codenames, Splendor, 7
Wonders, Dominion, Pandemic. Also, should games that are still loved but
rarely make it to the table be lessened in rating compared to lighter games
still regularly played? Or should I simply rate based on what >I< enjoy
playing, over what I'm able to table based on my gaming group/s?

Regards, Richard in Australia.

Richard, the only rule for voting is "there are no rules!". I always vote for my three favorite games and I suspect a lot of other folks do as well. But if you want to vote for games that you think are the most worthy, or most innovative, or the best designed, or the most influential, go right ahead. If you think a game's popularity should be a factor, or how easy it is to get to the table, then that's fine. It's entirely up to each voter to decide what should be the basis for their voting. That's always been the case for the annual MCA voting and it should be the same for these fun retrospectives. I can see someone using different criteria for the retrospectives than for the yearly voting (because more time has passed to judge a game's long-time value) and that's fine as well.

My top three games release in 2012 are, in order:

Machi Koro
Circus Grandioso
Eggs of Ostrich

With the current list of choices, I'll abstain, since none are better than
my 5th favorite release of 2012 - and given that I consider 2012 a really
weak year, I'd opt for "no award" over my 5th choice.

Yeah, Joe, the problem with those three games is that very few people had the chance to play them during 2012. For example, Machi Koro didn't have an English language edition until the next year. I'm sure that's why it got an MCA nomination in 2013, but not in 2012.

However, I will accept those three games as nominations, so if anyone wants to second one, I'll include it on the ballot. Don't worry about when you first played the game; the Geek considers them to be 2012 titles, so let's just go with that ruling. Next year, when we do the 2013 retrospective, I'll include Machi Koro whether or not it gets on the 2012 ballot. It's just a fun exercise, so no need to be too rigid about things.

Okay, the voting for the first MCA Retrospective, for the year 2012, is open. There are 37 games listed in your Voting Gateway at http://meepleschoice.win http://meepleschoice.win The rules are the same as for a normal finals vote: choose 3 or fewer of them. I'll shut things down next Friday and we'll see how our views compare with those of 5 years ago. Should be fun! Let me know if there are any problems with the voting. Thanks!

Wow, looking at that list ... there are so many good games!
- 1989, a twist on Twilight Struggle (in my top 3), might have gotten my
vote if only I'd played it more! Too bad there's no app or asynchronous
version.
- Andean Abyss: the first COIN game, right? I haven't played this one --
only played Cuba Libre -- but it sure did spawn quite a successful family!
- CO2: an early Lacerda game featuring coopetition. Only one play, but I
enjoyed it. Doesn't seem to have held up, although a reprint is still
coming ...
- Coup: if you like that micro game lie to your friends kind of thing
- Descent: I still need to play through all my first edition stuff!
- Eggs of Ostrich: a fun light game, doesn't seem a likely MCA choice but
was fun to play
- Escape: like Eggs (too light to win)? Fun for fans of speed, I guess
- Pax Porfiriana: wow, what a cool game! Sadly, takes repeat plays to have
any hope of understanding it ... and that's difficult to do these days.
- The Great Zimbabwe: cool Splotter game, with some ideas carried forward
into later more successful games (Food Chain Magnate)
- Tzolkin: I thought the gears would be just a gimmick but they worked well
- War of the Ring: SO good! And now with a cool repainted Anniversary
edition!
Still a few I haven't played, of course, but I guess that's inevitable!

Funny, to me, 2012 was very much a down year, easily the worst in a 5-year stretch of plenty. Tzolk'in and Terra Mystica are both excellent. But other than a few other favorites, like Palaces of Carrera and New Amsterdam, little else has survived. Different strokes and all that.

Suburbia and Rolling Freight still get a lot of play from me. The third
choice is probably a multi-way tie between Lords of Waterdeep, Trains,
Tzolkin. I don't care for Terra Mystica, I thought it was ok the first
time and each play made me want to play it less and less, til I traded it
away for Russian Railroads. Seeing as both parties thought they got the
better deal, I think that is a pretty great trade.

Too early to tell, but I'm pleased by the support so far. We've gotten 20 votes in the first few hours and that's enough to show me that people are interested in the retrospective looks. Certainly enough to do some other years.

Keyflower and Terra Mystica were easy choices for me, a cut above the rest.
Choosing that 3rd game wasn't quite so easy.

This was a much harder vote for me than this year's vote. Is the question
we're answering: What is the best game of 2012? (or best three games)
Because I've owned a lot of these games at one point and then sent them to
new homes, but I wouldn't say they are worse than the ones I kept. Las
Vegas is a terrific filler, for example, that I would never part with it.
It still gets routine play. Keyflower is a great design but stats showed I
hadn't played it in a few years so I sold it last year. Hmm, I can see how
perspectives change because I'm sure I would have voted it for it in 2012.

Without looking at what I voted for at the time, my votes in this poll went to Love Letter, Snowdonia and Vegas. Once I'd checked, I see I actually picked Lords of Waterdeep rather than Las Vegas four years ago (and LoW would have been my fourth choice this time) so not too different.

I'm sure my original vote included Tzolk'in and Terra Mystica, as they were far and away my favorites for the year. My third vote almost certainly went to New Amsterdam, another game I like a lot and which got a good amount of play back then.

This time, I went with Tzolk'in, Terra Mystica, and Palaces of Carrera. I still love Tzolk'in and wish I was better at it. I'd like to get it to the table some more, but for a 5 year old design, it gets played a reasonable amount (my group tends to play mostly new stuff). Terra Mystica's plays have pretty much evaporated. Not sure why--maybe it's just TOO challenging. Certainly I don't play it well, as much as I admire it. I don't like New Amsterdam any less, but now feel that Carrera, which gets played a bit more, may be a slightly better game. At the time of the original vote, I hadn't played it much, but have since grown to appreciate it considerably more. Overall, I'd say my views on 2012's games haven't changed much in the intervening 5 years.

I don't recall what I voted for back then. Now I picked Android Netrunner
and 1812 right away as two designs that expanded the circle of games my
normal eurogame friends would play. Both are really wonderful. For the
third pick I was less certain, but ultimately went with Las Vegas. It's
such a simple, little game, but one we play with some regularity. It's
joined the collection of game night closers.

Wow, this is really great to hear about two games: Circus Grandioso and Eggs of Ostrich that I otherwise would never know about. Finding out about some of these hidden gems is why I enjoy this type of forum.

Regarding Machi Koro, presumably owing to the English first edition in 2013, it was in the 2013 Meeple's Choice voting.

Finally, if there are any 2012 games that aren't mentioned in any of these lists that you'd strongly
consider as one of your top 3 games of the year, please post it. If we can get a second for any of
them, we'll include it in the poll.
My top three games release in 2012 are, in order:

Machi Koro
Circus Grandioso
Eggs of Ostrich

I'm on the 'fantastic year' side, which may have something to do with it
being the only year I've been to Essen.

Pax Porfiriana and Love Letter were easy picks - I still play both and
count them in my top 10. I'm sure I voted for them at the time too. The
third is trickier. At the time I suspect I picked Agricola ACBAS. I still
like that game, but Palaces of Carrara has also grown a lot in my
estimation subsequently. And Eggs of Ostrich is a game I hadn't played at
all until last year but now really love. Coup and Vegas are perennial
fillers for my group too.

First of all, aren't we looking at the Meeples Choice voting from four years ago, not five, as the games with a 2012 publication date would have been voted on in 2013.

Anyhow, looking at the list, it's reflective of the turnover in my regular play rotation that skews heavily towards the newer games. The only ones listed I think I've played in the last year would be CO2, Trains, Lover Letter and perhaps Manhattan Project. The only one of those four I would have a desire to play today would be CO2, as it's my favorite Lacerda design, looking forward to the remake coming in a year or two. Love Letter has never been more than a quick filler, and Manhattan Project I would have no desire to play as I feel the more recent Energy Empire is such a massive improvement.

Looking back at my own list of favorites (by searching BGG for games with a 2012 publication date, something that I know can be inaccurate as many of the dates I know for a fact are wrong) I note I have CO2 rated an "8" which seems about right. The one 2012 title I have rated higher and one I would therefore like to see added to the poll would be Ground Floor, which is still one of the best economic sims of all time, surprised to see it didn't make the final cut but that's something I attribute to the anti-KS bias among the voting group for these awards, something that certainly reared its ugly head with the snub of BrewCrafters last time around.

Having said all that, want to add a note how pleased I am to learn Great Western Trail, a game I have added to the rarified air of the "10" category, did manage to emerge as one of the final three this time around.

John, I don't see it as any kind of bias. Ground Floor has a 7.1 rating on the Geek with only 1400 ratings. It's far more likely that there just aren't enough people in the group who really like it. Brew Crafters' ratings are considerably better, but it was one of a dozen titles that missed being nominated last year by one vote.

We are in agreement about Great Western Trail, though. Great game!

I'll definitely second Palaces of Carrara (by far my favorite of 2012 though I rarely get to play it).
I'll also nominate Riff Raff (one of only two dexterity games I play regularly) and Spectaculum (probably my favorite Knizia of the 21st century)

Subject: [spielfrieks] Meeples Choice Retrospectives: 2012

So let's see if we can do this thing!  The first retrospective vote will be for five years ago:  2012.
Here are the 24 games that got nominations that year:
1812: The Invasion ofCanadaAgricola: All CreaturesBig & SmallAndean AbyssAndroid: NetrunnerClash of CulturesCO2CopycatEdoEscape: Curse of theTempleGinkgopolisKeyflowerLords of WaterdeepLove LetterMyrmesNieuw AmsterdamPax PorfirianaSeasonsSnowdoniaStar Wars: X-WingMiniaturesSuburbiaTerra MysticaThe Manhattan ProjectTrainsTzolk'in
In addition, there were six games that tied for 25th place in the preliminary round.  I didn't include them in the final voting because of issues with Yahoo Group's polling feature, but they'd be included if we did this today.  So let's include them in our retrospective vote.  They are:
1989:Dawn of FreedomLas VegasMice andMysticsRollingFreightThe GreatZimbabweThePalaces of Carrara
I went to the Geek to find out what the top-rated games from 2012 are.  There are five in the top 100 that aren't in our list.  There are three others in the top 250 from 2012.  So let me list them here and if we can get a second for any of them, I'll include them in the new election.  First, the top 100 games:
Descent (2nd edition)KemetRobinson CrusoeThe Resistance: AvalonWar of the Ring (2nd edition)
And here are the other three, less highly rated games:
LegendaryMage War ArenaTargi

So the voting for the 2012 Retrospective is over. We got 63 votes, which I think shows there’s a lot of interest in this. The difference in the results between this vote and the original aren’t extreme, but there’s still some interesting changes. Here are the top ten finishers, together with their vote totals and their rank during the first election in parentheses (“n/a” indicates that the game wasn’t nominated for the original election):

1. Tzolk’in – 23 (2)
2. Terra Mystica – 19 (1)
3. Snowdonia – 14 (6)
4. Keyflower – 13 (3)
5. Love Letter – 12 (4)
6. Robinson Crusoe – 9 (n/a)
6. Suburbia – 9 (10)
8. Las Vegas – 8 (n/a)
8. Lords of Waterdeep – 8 (5)
10. The Great Zimbabwe – 7 (n/a)

Terra Mystica and Tzolk’in dominated the original election. The same was true this time, but while TM had a 5 vote edge over Tzolk’in originally, this time we expressed a significant preference for Tzolk’in. Originally, Keyflower edged out Love Letter to take the third spot, while this time around, Snowdonia got considerably more support and edged out Keyflower. Two games that finished in the top 10 the first time around, but which got much less support this time were Seasons and Myrmes. Ginkgopolis also dropped from 7th to 11th.

35 of the 37 games got at least one vote. The only games to be shut out were 1989 and Edo.

So that’s the way it was and that’s the way it is for 2012. You can check out the complete standing with the app. Stay tuned for more messages, because this worked out so well, now I want to do 2011 and 2010!
