Discussion:
are there any Tichu bots?

Greetings...

After reading yesterday's discussion about idiot Tichu players, it
got me interested in learning this game. I own the game and have read
the rules a few times, but never really played enough hands with
anyone to discover the intricacies of the game. I admit that I've
more or less unfairly passed it off as a total luck-of-the-draw game.
(which I realize isn't the case)

Anyways, my question is wanting to know if there are any online or
offline AI programs to play (learn) Tichu with. I'm really just
interested in (again) learning the rules of the game by playing, and
would rather not venture into an all-human environment at first, if I
can avoid it. (I don't want to be anyone's idiot partner ;)

Thanks...

If you can find a computer version of President (other names for this game
include Elysee or A%#Hole), the games are remarkably similar...that and
playing with friends who were tolerant of my naivety at gaming groups were
what got my game to a point where I was comfortable taking it on BSW.

An English version of Elysee / President is available here:

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/vincent.brevart/english/

Note, too, that I'm sure there are folks on BSW who would be happy to help a
new player learn....as the initiate of yesterday's conversation, I wasn't so
upset that my idiot partner called Tichu over me in and of itself (certainly
I've done my share of playing over my partner's won tricks), but that he
knew better than to do it, and his excuse was that "his hand was so good he
couldn't resist....". If he'd just screwed up and admitted it, no problem.

Which brings up the point I've been thinking of since this thread started:

While I understand the desire to vent about "idiot" partners, it's an
incredibly bad idea to do so in a public forum. These types of posts are
remarkably effective at discouraging new players from trying the game.

Jonathan:
I agree strongly with Greg, and I'll put it another way. If you're a
newbie, please don't allow yourself to be intimidated out of playing
Tichu online. If you feel the need, let others know you're a newbie
and will be making mistakes. If you're experienced, you just need to
accept a world where you'll be taking on partners of unknown
experience and laugh it off when things go wrong. If you feel the
need, inquire as to the experience of other players who might be
joining a game.

Dave Arnott was telling me that he's played hundreds of online Tichu
sessions, and it took him a little while to just accept the fact that
sometimes you get a partner who isn't up to your own level.
Sometimes you have great games; sometimes you have blowouts.

It is better to have played and lost than never to have played at
all.

Tichu is a great game, but with a big learning curve. Don't let
inexperience keep you from... eventually becoming experienced.

I agree, and I hope my followup post conveyed that. This wasn't an incident
of "inexperience", this was an issue of abject stupidity, and you're going
to find that online everyplace sooner or later.

The only way to truly get better at Tichu is to play it lots and lots, and
consider each hand a learning experience. Just make it known when you get
into a game that you're new at it, and if that's a problem with your
potential playmates, I'm sure they will say so, and you just shrug it off
and find another game.

But DO play it, as it is a truly excellent game. My handle on there is
clemon79, and if you see me there, I'll partner with you anytime, with no
expectations. :)

As near as I can tell, Tichu is based on Fizbin, which was featured in
the classic Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action". Check out the
Scifi channel, they show it all the time.

Doesn't sound like the same rules, but the chaos is close:

Kirk: The name of the game is called... Fizzbin. Each player gets 6
cards, except for the player on the dealer's right, who gets 7.
Thug: On the right.
Kirk: Yeah. The second card is turned up, except on Tuesdays.
Thug: Tuesday.
Kirk: Ohh! Look what you've got- 2 jacks. You got a half-fizzbin
already.
Thug: I need another jack?
Kirk: No. If you got another jack, why you'd have a shralk.
Thug: A shralk?
Kirk: Yes, you'd be disqualified. No, what you need now is either a
king
and a deuce, except at night, of course, when you'd need a queen and a
four.
Thug: Except at night.
Kirk: Right. Oh, look at that, you've got another jack! How lucky you
are! How wonderful for you! Now if you didn't get another jack, if you
had gotten a king, why then you'd get another card except when it's
dark
, when you'd have to give it back.
Thug: If it were dark on Tuesday.
Kirk: Yes, but what you're after is a royal fizzbin, but the odds of
getting a royal fizzbin are astron - Spock, what are the odds on
getting
a royal fizzbin?
Spock: I have never computed them, Captain.
Kirk: Well, they're astronomical, believe me. Now, for the last card,
we'll call it a kronk. You got that?
Thug: What?
(chaos ensues)

Sounds more like Cosmic Eidex to me. Tichu is really pretty simple
(rules-wise) after the first couple hands. Print out Aaron Fuegi's
cheat sheet: http://scv.bu.edu/~aarondf/Games/Tichu/

First time we played Cosmic Eidex we all started quoting the Fizzbin
rules. After playing it enough to where I feel like I really know the
game, I still think of Fizzbin when I'm trying to explain it to
newbies. I think Cosmic Eidex is probably the closest thing to Fizzbin
I've ever played. Very confusing!
