[spielfrieks] Meeples Choice Awards: Preliminary Round

Okay, we’re ready to get to get this show on the road! First up is the preliminary round of voting. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions; we now have 193 games to choose from. I’ve uploaded a revised Excel spreadsheet to the Spielfrieks Files section to reflect the additions. During the first round, everyone will be able to select up to 10 games to vote for and the top 25 vote-getters, plus ties, will receive nominations and will advance to the final round of voting.

How do you cast those votes? Why, with our lovely voting application that we introduced last year! Nothing has changed since then, but I’m sure you’ll appreciate a refresher on how to use it. First, go to the following website: http://meepleschoice.win. You’ll see five menu headers at the top right of the screen. If you created an account last year, click on “Sign In”. You’ll be prompted for your Login (that is, your Username) and your Password. Put both of those in and you’ll be ready to cast votes. If you don’t remember your password, click on the Forgot Password? prompt and we’ll get your password back out to you. If you don’t have an account, click on "Sign Up" and you'll be asked to create a Username, provide your Email address, and create a Password. You can also log in using either your Google or Facebook accounts. Once you've filled out the fields, click on the Sign Up button and you'll be entered into the database.

Once you’re logged in, you can vote by going to the Home screen. There are two big buttons there, labelled “Vote” and “See Results”. Clicking on the “See Results” button won’t show you anything, ‘cause we haven’t voted on nothin’ yet! (I’ve hidden the 2015 results for now, since I figured that would just confuse matters.) So the button you want to click on is the Vote one. Doing so will show you a screen with all 193 games listed. To the left of each game is a green button that says “Add vote (10)”. To vote for a game, click on the button. The button will turn red and say “Remove vote”. That shows that you voted for it. Also note that all the other green buttons now have a (9) in parentheses, to show that you only have nine votes left. If you want to change your vote, just click on a red button; it will change back to green and it, and all the other green buttons will have their parenthetical values increased by 1. Once you’ve voted for 10 games, the text on the other games will change to “vote limited” and those buttons will be disabled, keeping you from voting for an eleventh game. The only way you can add a new game is by removing your vote for one of the games you’d selected.

That's it. There's no button to register your final vote, because the system records your votes automatically as you vote for games. The app remembers your votes after you leave the screen and/or logout. When you return to the application, you'll see all the choices you've previously made. Because there's no formal way to finalize your vote, make sure you're happy with the selections on the screen before the voting deadline comes and I shut down the voting.

There’s one other thing I’d like everyone to do. At the bottom of the voting page, you’ll see a question about your preference for letting other users see how you voted. If you don’t mind having your votes be public, select the first choice; if you’d rather your votes be private, select the second one. Once all the voting is over, we’ll be able to click on a game and see the usernames of the people who voted for it, but only among those who selected the first option. That will let folks check out how their fellow spielfrieks voted, while still honoring the privacy of those who would rather their votes remain secret.

By the way, for now, just ignore the sentence at the very top of the voting page that states whether or not your votes are public. That was something was added last year, with the goal of giving the voters an easy way to toggle their preference, but it hasn’t been implemented yet and isn’t tied to how you vote on the question at the bottom of the page. So just make your choice on the question at the bottom and if we can, we’ll add the toggle feature at the top of the voting pages later on.

I’ll give everyone a week for the first round of voting, so sometime on Monday, July 3, I’ll shut down the voting. Then I’ll announce what the nominated games are and we’ll continue with the final round of voting.

If there are any questions about the application, just post them here. Have fun voting!

Oops, I totally missed the nomination stage, at which I would have suggested High Treason: the Trial of Louis Riel. Oh well :)

Not a problem, Martin. It's still early, so I added the game to the list. So feel free to treason away!

Okay, I have a correction to make, due to a miscommunication between Wei-Hwa and me. The toggle at the top of the voting page does indeed work! So if you want your selections to remain private, please click on the green "Change this" box at the top and your choice will switch to "Your votes are currently set to have your identity be hidden to other voters." If you don't mind other people viewing your votes, just leave it alone or toggle back to the original choice if you've been playing around with it. Your choice for this will determine whether or not your votes will be public, not your answer to the question at the bottom of the page. I've taken away that bottom poll, to try to avoid confusion. Sorry for the mixup, but I'm sure you all can handle it!

Having trouble logging into the site, probably because it's been a year. It keeps saying invalid user name or password, I don't know which, but when I try to create a new account, it says there already is one under my email. Sort of a catch 22 situation.

Wish you had kept the voting the way it was in the past -- much simpler and more user-friendly.

Allow me to offer up another opinion. This web-based voting is far simpler
to me (mainly due to how horrible the yahoo groups is). Last year was the
1st time I partook in the voting and I have been a spielfriek for about 15
years

Thanks,

Another satisfied customer for the new voting method - I've voted almost
every year but it was a hassle plus to vote in the old system.

Thanks, Larry & Wei Hwa!

It's working for me now -- thanks.

Just saw the list -- curious as to why Manhattan Project: Energy Empire is not on there. It's a totally different game from the original and should not be considered as an expansion.

Which raises a question about when expansions should be considered. For example, Tesla vs Edison: Powering Up drastically changed (and IMHO) improved the original such that it might be deserving of a nomination. So, what is the ruling on including these two?

John, the ruling on expansions, for as long as I can remember, is that if it requires the base game to be played, then it isn't eligible, but if it's a standalone expansion, then it can be nominated. (There are some common sense exceptions, like the Ticket to Ride expansions, which only use the trains and cards from the base game, and the Winsome 18xx games, which require 1830 to be played.) The judgment call on which expansions change the gameplay sufficiently to qualify would be a nightmare. If enough people have an issue with this, we can discuss this in the period following the election, but I will say that including expansions would probably change the focus of the awards fairly significantly.

We could add a category for expansions, and possibly one for rereleases.

I don't remember what previous versions of the voting system were like, but
how could anybody have a problem with the current one? It's so clear and
quick to use. My only issue was remembering what some of these titles are
(Automobiles . . . I think this one's different than the one I own?).

It's fun to be a part of this voting process again!

Jacob, as always, I appreciate your support and positive outlook. Thanks.

Last year's Automobiles is the cube-building race game. Automobile is the Martin Wallace financial game from a few years back. Neither should be confused with Automania!

That might be doable, Doug, although other features would probably have to be added before we address that one. Right now, I input all of the game titles into the app by hand. The ability to import a file of game titles automatically is on Wei-Hwa's to-do list. Once that's done, it might be fairly easy to import BGG links as well. Thanks for the suggestion--it's a good one.
