So last year, after conducting the election, we decided to do an unofficial re-vote of some of the earlier elections we'd carried out. A lot of people participated and the results were quite interesting, so I thought we'd try to do it again this year. Let's do a retrospective on the 2013, 2008, 2003, and 1998 elections. We'll start with 2013.

Originally, we nominated the following 27 games:

1775: Rebellion
A Study in Emerald
Amerigo
Augustus
Bora Bora
Bruges
Bruxelles 1893
Caverna
Coal Baron
Concept
Concordia
Cuba Libre
Forbidden Desert
Francis Drake
Glass Road
La Boca
Lewis & Clark
Machi Koro
Madeira
Nations
One Night Werewolf
Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords
Prosperity
Rialto
Rococo
Russian Railroads

Spyrium

All of these games get an automatic entry into the retrospective poll. I also checked the Geek for other highly ranked games from that year and came up with the following eight:

BattleCON: Devastation of Indines
BattleLore (Second Edition)
Eldritch Horror
Euphoria: Build a Better Dystopia
Firefly: The Game
Hanamikoji
Sushi Go!
Viticulture

If any of you rank any of these games in your top 3 for the year, post the game here and we'll consider it to be seconded and I'll include it in the poll.

Finally, anyone can nominate a game from 2013. If it gets seconded by another voter, I'll include it in the poll as well.

I'll wait a few days to give people time to make suggestions and seconds. Then, I'll set up a new poll and we can all vote on the games for a second time. Let's see if we feel the same way we did back then!

I'd love to nominate *開拓王* (King of Frontier), *Continental Divide*,
and *Sissi:
Die Bohnenkaiserin*.

(Though no worries if you'd prefer to consign *Continental Divide* to its
reprint year, rather than the initial Winsome print.)

I'll nominate
Geister, Geister, Schatzsuchmeister!
and
Tajemnicze Domostwo
and I'll second Impulse.
The problem with the 1st two is the problem they share with Hanamikoji -- general availability came much later than 2013. Also the two games I nominated now have English versions.  In the case of  Tajemnicze Domostwo, the English version may be inferior due to the convoluted rule set.

ack...
I just noticed one that I'd certainly vote for top 3;

Navajo Wars
Of 2013 games with at least 500 ratings, only Caverna, Concordia,  BattleCON: Devastation of Indines and (?) Race! Formula 90 have slightly higher average ratings.

and (if I can nominate/second more than three),Gravwell and Ravens of Thri Sahashri

Wow, tons of responses. I love it!

Just to summarize where we are, the following games have been added to the polls:

Eldritch Horror
Viticulture
Hanamikoji
Euphoria
The King of Frontier
Sissi!: Die Bohnenkaiserin
Impulse

In addition, there are 16 other games that will be added if they receive a second. And, of course, you can keep on suggesting other games to be added.

I'm not nearly as concerned about the rules for qualifying for these retrospectives than I am for the official elections. So, for example, 2013's Tajemnicze Domostwo is better known as Mysterium, which came out 2 years later. If both versions of the game wind up being nominated (in 2013 and 2015), I'm not going to have a cow. The whole point of this is to have some fun and check to see if tastes have changed over the years. So feel free to nominate any game of 2013 that you want to--it won't have any effect on other elections.

Keep those responses coming, guys!

Oh, yeah, Ted, it's quite the monster of a game. The rules are hard to get through, the game is long, VERY swingy, and can be unfair at times. We were hoping when it was picked up by a bigger publisher for its second edition, that some of those rough edges would be dealt with via development. Unfortunately, the publisher was a new one and Patchistory was its first effort, so the new edition was pretty much identical to the original. OTOH, the game is undeniably epic, in a way that many modern games just aren't, so maybe all those rough edges make it the game it is. It is NOT for the faint of heart, and its intensity and length mean it's been a while since I've been able to get it to the table, but it's undeniably a great game and a unique one as well. So if you can get the right group together and are willing to wade through some rules, I can definitely recommend it.

Well, that was some explosion of nominations for the 2013 Retrospective! As a result, we now have *40* games we can choose from! Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.

So let's get started. I've set up the poll, so we can all vote. The rules are the same as for a regular election: select three or fewer games you think are the best from that year. Some of us may be traveling on or about the 4th, so I'll keep things open until Sunday, July 8. Then we'll see if we've changed our minds over the last few years!

Here's the list of games to choose from:

1775: Rebellion
A Study in Emerald
Amerigo
Augustus
BattleLore (Second Edition)
Bora Bora
Bruges
Bruxelles 1893
Caverna
