So let’s check out 2008 next. We nominated 25 games for the original election that year. Here they are, in alphabetical order:

After the Flood
Aquaretto
Battlestar Galactica
Chicago Express
Conflict of Heroes
Cosmic Encounter
Diamonds Club
Dominion
Ghost Stories
Le Havre
Lost Cities: The Board Game
Manoeuvre
Metropolys
Municipium
Pandemic
Planet Steam
Powerboats
Royal Palace
Say Anything
Snow Tails
Space Alert
Steel Driver
Stone Age
Tinners' Trail
Wealth of Nations

Here’s the top 5 games, by Geek ranking, that didn’t make the list. All it takes is a seconding post to put any of these in the election:

Combat Commander: Pacific
Dixit
Formula D
Roll Through the Ages: Bronze Age
Time's Up! Title Recall!

As usual, please feel free to nominate any other 2008 game that you think you’ll put in your top 3. If someone else seconds it, the game will be added to the list.

Let’s give it a few days to percolate and then I’ll set up a poll and we’ll revote the ’08 election. Thanks!

Ok time to chime in. Love times up. Been playing before it was published as characters. Only played title recall once. It may have been lack of knowledge, but it was not my favorite.

So since Preussische Ostbahn will be on the ballot, I'm going to combine it with German Railroads, the subsequent Queen remake, since they're essentially the same game, but some of you may be more familiar with the latter title.

I completely agree about Time's Up, Ted. The original is one of my favorite games, but the Titles version isn't nearly as enjoyable for me. Trying to guess people is just more fun (and laugh inducing) than guessing titles.

Times Up! Title Recall is much easier for my family and friends and their
families to play. I think it is because the titles are much easier to
describe/act out even when the person doesn't know the movie/book/play. It
is fairly easy to convey Born to be Wild if I don't know what it is, but
how do I convey Charles De Gaulle if I have no idea who he is?
It is a go-to game for our barbecues. And the women always win. And no,
they won't let me on their team.

This matches my experience. It seems like a bigger stumbling block to try
and step outside a name than a title. It has been easier to get people to
buy into not worrying about the actual thing on the card and break it down
for the usual common words in a title than an entire name.

For the record, though, I would do "Charles De Gaulle" as

Round 1- First name like Dickens
Not night but...
Take out bladder (point to side and wince)

Round 2- Bladder (point to side and wince)

Round 3- Point to side and wince (and maybe say Ow if allowed)

I will second Dixit (although it is close to not making top 3 for me)
There are some solid family games here as well as some very good coops, each approaching the genre differently.

I'd like to nominate Nefertiti (which was completely off my radar in 2008
but I discovered it in 2014 and loved it).

Also, it's probably not going to make my top 3, but it's a bit strange that
Lost Cities: the Boardgame is on the list but SdJ winner Keltis isn't --
are they considered the same game for purposes of this vote?

I really don't know why the group went with the Lost Cities Boardgame and bit Keltis back then, Wei-Hwa. Maybe the former game was easier to acquire. There are some differences between the two, but for the purposes of this vote, let's make it one entry. So in the poll, it will read Keltis/Lost Cities Boardgame. They're so similar, it seems silly to split the vote.

Funny, to me, 2008 seems like a weak year, for the very reason that several folks have praised it: there were lots of good, accessible, middleweight games, but not too many meaty ones. It doesn't help that I've never been a big fan of Dominion. 2013 felt like a much stronger year.

Yeah, the irony is that if you're looking for impactful games, from the point of view of gaming history, 2008 is hugely significant. The first deckbuilder (Dominion), the game that really popularized cooperative designs (Pandemic), a very accessible WP game (Stone Age), plus Le Havre, BSG, Space Alert, Ghost Stories, Dixit--these are games that had real influence and passed the test of time. And none of them are particular favorites of mine! So different strokes and all that. '08 honestly ranks as one of my weakest years ever, while most of the gaming world was heads over heels in love with it.
