Discussion:
[spielfrieks] Viewing Other Voter's Selections

So now that the election is over, it's time to discuss ways of improving the experience. Let's start with how we view the results. Many of you in the past have requested the ability to see how your fellow spielfrieks have voted. This should be possible in some form, but before we build in that ability, I thought it would be prudent to check with the group to see if there are any issues with this. Consequently, I've set up a new poll, which you can now access by clicking on the Vote button on your Home screen. The question is, "What do you think about seeing how everyone voted?" and there are three choices:
I'd love to see which games other people voted for. I don't care if anyone sees my own votes.
I'm not that interested in what other people voted for, but I don't mind if they see what I voted for.
I would prefer it if other people couldn't see what I voted for.
Please check this out when you have the chance and make exactly one selection. If we have a lot of people choosing the first selection and only a small number choosing the third one, then we'll implement a way that you can view how everyone voted. If, however, we see more than a few folks choosing the third option, then we may have a privacy issue to deal with and we'll discuss ways in which people can hide their votes (which will obviously take more work).

It's democracy in action, kids, so vote early and vote...once. Thanks!

I may get round to that poll. But everything in the current setup works, there isn't actually any need to change anything.

It's interesting to know what the number of votes for each game was, but to
know the identity of each voter seems strange to me. I'd be more open to
revealing numbers, but keeping names anonymous so I could see, "Oh, the
person who likes Food Chain Magnate also liked five other games I voted
for. Maybe I should look into FCM to see if it's my kind of game" or
something like that.

Gotta find that voting link.

My question is whether with all this data, we could create a
preditions/recommendation system.

For the people who correlate best with your 10 votes in the primary, what
were their top 3, rather than the whole group.

The closer your top 10 are to the other person's top 10, the more weight
their top 3 are given.

You do love your recommendation systems, don't you Jonathan?

My first question is if anyone knows how to do something like this? I don't think it's very easy and we only have a limited amount of data to draw on.

While something like this could be interesting, I'm always somewhat dubious because most of the systems I've seen don't give very good results. The "similar games" recommendations on the Geek are pretty wonky, to say the least. As for me, while I sometimes get interesting recommendations from folks whose tastes I'm familiar with, it's pretty unusual to find anything better than just reading the online rules.

Yes, Larry, I'd rather play the 10 games I would be most likely to like
than read 90 sets of rules to find that same needle in the haystack. :)

GeekBuddies - You can even set up subgroups of GeekBuddies especially for
ratings if you wish.

I'm one of the people who like to see what others voted for (as we could do with the Yahoo polls). I know my votes are unlikely to coincide with the winners (Codenames was my one match this year) but there are certain people whose tastes I know are not too far from mine so if Martyn, for instance, picks a game I've not heard of or dismissed for whatever reason, I'll tend to investigate further to see what I might have missed.
