[spielfrieks] 2001 Retrospective Nominations

Let’s keep going back in our time machine. The year is 2001. We’re starting to get to the point where some of the years have incomplete results. (The first election I supervised was for the 2003 gaming year. The only way I could compile results for previous years was by combing through the Spielfrieks message boards and some of the results just weren’t listed.) For the original 2001 election, I know all 25 games which were nominated, but I only have vote totals for the top 11 games. Still, that won’t stop us from doing our retrospective. Here are the original nominated games:

Africa

Capitol

Das Amulett

Die Neuen Entdecker

Dragon's Gold

DVONN

Evo

Flower Power

Funkenschlag

Industrial Waste

K&K Cardgame

Liberte

Magier von Pangea

Medina

Pampas Railroads

Risk 2210 A.D.

Royal Turf

San Marco

Starship Catan

Traders of Genoa

Urland

Valley of the Mammoths

Volldampf

Vom Kap Bis Kairo

Wyatt Earp

Additionally, here are three well ranked games that didn’t get nominated. If anyone will second them, we’ll include them in the mix as well:

Hive

Wilderness War

Zendo

Finally, as usual, we’ll accept nominations for any other 2001 games. Any designs that get a nomination and a second will be added to the list.

Here’s a fun fact: there’s only one 2001 design that is included in the Geek’s top 300 games. As a matter of fact, it’s Hive (#179). There’s only two such games in the top 450 and only five titles in the top 600. Still think the Geek isn’t biased against older games?

Make any nominations and seconds that you want for the next couple of days. Then, sometime on Wednesday, I’ll input the games into the app and we’ll vote. I’ll let it run until next Tuesday, since many of you will probably be traveling over the holiday weekend. So start thinking about the first year of the century and party on!

I note that the Geek lists Transamerica as 2001, but we already had it in
2002. Does it make sense to nominate it for 2001?

I'd like to nominate the following:

SdJ winner Villa Paletti

Munchkin

Knockabout

The first two, I probably won't vote for but I feel they should be on the
ballot. The last one I might actually vote for -- it's an ingenious little
abstract.

SdJ winner Villa Paletti
Isn't Villa Paletti likewise a 2002 game? At any rate, it must be the
same year as Puerto Rico, because I distinctly remember it beating out
PR for SdJ.

*Subject:* [spielfrieks] 2001 Retrospective Nominations
Let’s keep going back in our time machine. The year is 2001. We’re
starting to get to the point where some of the years have incomplete
results. (The first election I supervised was for the 2003 gaming year. The
only way I could compile results for previous years was by combing through
the Spielfrieks message boards and some of the results just weren’t listed.)
For the original 2001 election, I know all 25 games which were nominated,
but I only have vote totals for the top 11 games. Still, that won’t stop
Africa
Capitol
Das Amulett
Die Neuen Entdecker

Industrial Waste
K&K Cardgame
Liberte
Magier von Pangea

Pampas Railroads
Risk 2210 A.D.
Royal Turf
San Marco
Starship Catan
Traders of Genoa
Urland
Valley of the Mammoths
Volldampf
Vom Kap Bis Kairo
Wyatt Earp
Additionally, here are three well ranked games that didn’t get nominated.
Hive
Wilderness War
Zendo
Finally, as usual, we’ll accept nominations for any other 2001 games. Any
designs that get a nomination and a second will be added to the list.
Here’s a fun fact: there’s only one 2001 design that is included in the
Geek’s top 300 games. As a matter of fact, it’s Hive (#179). There’s
only two such games in the top 450 and only five titles in the top 600. Still
think the Geek isn’t biased against older games?
Make any nominations and seconds that you want for the next couple of days.
Then, sometime on Wednesday, I’ll input the games into the app and we’ll
vote. I’ll let it run until next Tuesday, since many of you will
probably be traveling over the holiday weekend. So start thinking about
the first year of the century and party on!

Anye's right--the 2001 Alea game was called Royal Turf. When it was reprinted in 2006 by Face2Face, it was renamed Winner's Circle. AFAIK, the two games are the same mechanically.

Other issues: the Geek listing TransAmerica as a 2001 design is probably a mistake. The original game, by Winning Moves, came out in 2002. The game is derived from Iron Road, which was released by Winsome in 2001 and is also by Franz-Benno Delonge, but there are some mechanical differences between the two titles. The Geek gives the two games different listings, so I can't think of any justification for showing TransAmerica as an '01 title.

Villa Paletti debuted at the 2001 Essen fair. Puerto Rico was released during the spring of 2002. Both were therefore eligible for the 2002 SdJ award, but the former was a 2001 title.

Finally, Knockabout is not only a fine game, but the designer, Greg Lam, is a good guy and I'm happy to see one of his games is still remembered after all this time.
