[spielfrieks] 2006 Retrospective Nominations

Okay, let’s keep the ball rolling. 2007 may have been a stable year, but I have a feeling that 2006 will see some dramatic change. Originally, 25 games were nominated. Additionally, Cleopatra and the Society of Architects lost out in a tiebreaker, probably due to extreme name length, so since it would have made the list with our current rules, I’ll include it as well. Here are the games:

Arkadia

BattleLore

Blue Moon City

C&C: Ancients

Canal Mania

Cleopatra and the Society of Architects

Factory Fun

Hermagor

Imperial

Leonardo da Vinci

Medici vs Strozzi

Mr. Jack

Mykerinos

On the Underground

Perikles

Qwirkle

Rum & Pirates

Space Dealer

Taluva

Tempus

The Pillars of the Earth

Through the Ages

Thurn and Taxis

Ticket to Ride - MÀrklin

To Court the King

Yspahan

As usual, I checked the Geek for highly ranked games that didn’t make the cut and, surprisingly, found four in the top 200:

Combat Commander: Europe

Here I Stand

Neuroshima Hex!

Shogun

I’m really surprised that all of these missed out originally, particularly Shogun. Anyway, these are nominated and if anyone seconds them, they’ll be added to the list.

Finally, as usual, we’ll accept nominations for any other 2006 games. Any designs that get a nomination and a second will be added.

I’ll be traveling again this week (sadly, little, if any gaming will be involved), so I’ll limit the period for suggestions until Tuesday afternoon. Then, I’ll input the games into the app and the voting will run until next Monday. Thanks for continuing to support this!

Is there a quick way to see a list of more games published in 2006? I went
to Marklin's entry on BGG to click on "2006" to see what other games were
made that year . . . but the 2006 is not linked to anything. I don't know
what significant games we might be overlooking.

Is there a quick way to see a list of more games published in 2006? I
went
to Marklin's entry on BGG to click on "2006" to see what other games were
made that year . . . but the 2006 is not linked to anything. I don't know
what significant games we might be overlooking.
Jacob
Okay, let=E2=80=99s keep the ball rolling. 2007 may have been a stable
y=
ear, but
I have a feeling that 2006 will see some dramatic change. Originally,
25
games were nominated. Additionally, Cleopatra and the Society of
Architects lost out in a tiebreaker, probably due to extreme name
length,
so since it would have made the list with our current rules,
I=E2=80=99ll=
include
Arkadia
BattleLore
Blue Moon City
C&C: Ancients
Canal Mania
Cleopatra and the Society of Architects
Factory Fun
Hermagor
Imperial
Leonardo da Vinci
Medici vs Strozzi
Mr. Jack
Mykerinos
On the Underground
Perikles
Qwirkle
Rum & Pirates
Space Dealer
Taluva
Tempus
The Pillars of the Earth
Through the Ages
Thurn and Taxis
Ticket to Ride - M=C3=A4rklin
To Court the King
Yspahan
As usual, I checked the Geek for highly ranked games that
didn=E2=80=99t =
make the
Combat Commander: Europe
Here I Stand
Neuroshima Hex!
Shogun
I=E2=80=99m really surprised that all of these missed out originally,
par=
ticularly
Shogun. Anyway, these are nominated and if anyone seconds them,
they=E2=
=80=99ll
be added to the list.
Finally, as usual, we=E2=80=99ll accept nominations for any other 2006
ga=
mes. Any
designs that get a nomination and a second will be added.
I=E2=80=99ll be traveling again this week (sadly, little, if any
gaming w=
ill be
involved), so I=E2=80=99ll limit the period for suggestions until
Tuesday=
afternoon.
Then, I=E2=80=99ll input the games into the app and the voting will
run u=
ntil next
Monday. Thanks for continuing to support this!

Subject: [spielfrieks] 2006 Retrospective Nominations

Okay, let’skeep the ball rolling. 2007 may havebeen a stable year, but I
have a feeling that 2006 will see some dramaticchange. Originally, 25 games
werenominated. Additionally, Cleopatra andthe Society of Architects lost out
in a tiebreaker, probably due to extremename length, so since it would have
made the list with our current rules, I’llinclude it as well. Here are the
games: ArkadiaBattleLoreBlue MoonCityC&C:AncientsCanalManiaCleopatraand the
Society of ArchitectsFactoryFunHermagorImperialLeonardoda VinciMedici
vsStrozziMr. JackMykerinosOn theUndergroundPeriklesQwirkleRum
&PiratesSpaceDealerTaluvaTempusThePillars of the EarthThroughthe AgesThurn
andTaxisTicket toRide - MÀrklinTo Courtthe KingYspahan As usual,I checked
the Geek for highly ranked games that didn’t make the cut and, surprisingly,
found four in the top 200: CombatCommander: EuropeHere
IStandNeuroshimaHex!Shogun I’mreally surprised that all of these missed out
originally, particularlyShogun. Anyway, these are nominated andif anyone
seconds them, they’ll be added to the list. Finally, asusual, we’ll accept
nominations for any other 2006 games. Any designs that get a nomination and
asecond will be added. I’ll betraveling again this week (sadly, little, if
any gaming will be involved), so I’lllimit the period for suggestions until
Tuesday afternoon. Then, I’ll input the games into the app andthe voting
will run until next Monday. Thanks for continuing to support this!

Through the Ages has problems for me. It is absolutely one of my picks for best game, but the NEW version, not the 2006 version. To me I feel I shouldn't put it as a 2006 vote, because I am unlikely to play that version.

Is this wrong?

I feel like you should consider revisions as part of the original game for
these purposes.

There is no right or wrong for these cases, Richard. Each voter has to decide for themselves and it may vary from instance to instance.

That can be one of the difficulties with retrospective voting. The insight provided us by the passage of time can also lead to something of a revisionist history. And this can cause us to ask which version of a game should I vote for, or what year should a game be assigned to. For example, in last year's voting, Biblios got a fair amount of support. But even though the original version of the game (under a different title) came out in 2007, few had the chance to play it then and the version that became popular, due to greater coverage, improved art, and slightly different gameplay, wasn't released until 2010. Obviously, several voters felt it was worth selecting for the 2007 election; maybe more didn't vote for it, viewing it as a 2010 title--I don't know. So these are awkward questions, but I deliberately give no guidance for them. It's up to each individual to decide how they want to deal with each case.

If it helps, I'll point out that there isn't a huge amount of difference between the original and revised versions of TtA. Combat has been nerfed and some cards tweaked. And the artwork had been updated, of course. But while the two versions have enough variance to justify giving them separate entries on the Geek, they're 90% the same, maybe more. Is that enough for you to vote for the 2006 version, when it's the 2015 version that you like? That's your call.

Some of us did not vote for the new version of Through the Ages recently as we felt it was not really a new game.

Thanks Larry and others for chiming in - still learning! Appreciated the comments about refraining from votes on the new edition - convinced me to add my vote for 2006.

I also appreciate your comments Larry that it is ultimately up to us to make our own decisions. Personally I know there are others here with much more experience than I, so while having the freedom to choose is good, I liked having the additional feedback in this case.

PS: Kingdomino and Barenpark finally arriving on Australian shores in the last month. While lighter fare, I'm sure Barenpark will be vying for my 3 votes for 2017, and Kingdomino will certainly be on my 2016 retrospective. Sigh, I know it's unreasonable for games to instantly be available worldwide, but it really emphasises the distance Australia is from our hobby's hearts in Europe and North America.

Personally, I would vote for whatever version happens to be in the pool: if it made the top 30, why not vote for it? In this specific example, even if New TTA completely replaced old TTA for me, the original was still fantastic and I'd still vote for it.

I think it's helpful to have a standard practice to avoid splitting the vote for a particular game. So I would advocate for always voting for the original edition of the game.
